Description
No. 36 Saddler Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates back to the 17th century, with a front that is dated 1844. The front features a renewed timber frame with rendered infill and is topped by a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, consisting of one bay.
The Mannerist-style front includes a shop area with a blocked central door, and a former house door to the right that has two round-headed panels. Both doors are situated under small pediments within arched recesses. Tapered pilasters frame the doors and windows, which are all arched and feature voussoirs and bracketed keys.
On the first floor, a window is framed by decorative pilasters and flanked by consoles, all beneath a deep bracketed cornice. The window has Ipswich-patterned glazing bars. The second floor has paired sash windows that are also flanked by pilasters, with a wave-patterned lintel string above. The gable features a collar with a carved shaft, which is dated and initialled TM1844, along with a 1979 date and a dragonfly motif above. The gable also has carved wavy bargeboards that rest on paired brackets.
Inside, there is a timber-framed left wall and an early 18th-century staircase that has a close string, turned balusters, and a grip handrail.
