Description
No. 37 Saddler Street is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the early to mid-18th century. The exterior features incised stucco with painted ashlar dressings, and some grey brick is visible. The roof is pantiled with a renewed brick chimney. The building stands three storeys high and consists of one bay.
The entrance is a recessed six-panelled door with a three-paned overlight to the right, while to the left is a three-light shop window with one canted light beside the door. The façade is adorned with panelled pilasters and a bracketed fascia. The upper floors feature sash windows with glazing bars, set within architraves that have projecting stone sills. There is a painted ashlar eaves band and a low parapet at the right end, although the left bracket has been removed.
Inside, there is a dog-leg open-string staircase with two narrow skittle balusters per tread, a ramped grip handrail, and carved tread ends. The rear first-floor room boasts full-height raised panelling.
