Description

Nos. 41 and 42 on Saddler Street is an early 19th-century house that has been converted into a shop, with a late 19th-century shopfront. The building features incised stucco with painted quoins and dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof with a brick-coped right end gable and a banded left end brick chimney. It stands three storeys high and has three bays.

The shopfront is designed in a Mannerist style, featuring a canted central entrance with a double partly-glazed door beneath an arched fanlight. There are similar doors on the left and right ends, flanked by panelled pilasters. The shop windows have elliptical-headed narrow lights, with two on each side of the entrance and one on each side. An enriched entablature includes decorative drops over the pilasters and doors, as well as paired drops from the modillions of a prominent cornice.

On the upper floors, the first-floor casements have inscriptions in painted glass, while the second-floor sashes are fitted with glazing bars and set within lugged architraves that have projecting stone sills.

Inside the shop, there are etched glass panels at the back of the windows, a tall curved showcase in the centre of the floor, and an oval gallery with an iron balustrade.
