Description
No. 40 Saddler Street is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the early 18th century. It features incised stucco with painted ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and has one bay. The ground floor exhibits channelled rustication, with a recessed four-panelled door on the left, which is topped by a margined overlight. To the right, there are paired sash windows beneath a bracketed projection that supports giant Tuscan pilasters. The top cornice juts forward over paired leaf-carved brackets situated above the pilasters.
Inside, there is a brick-vaulted basement at the front. The building has a closed-string dog-leg staircase with two wavy rails below a grip handrail, which has panelled sides. This staircase extends through two floors below ground and three storeys above, as the site slopes steeply to the rear. A two-panelled door is located on the lowest landing, and the deep panelled door reveals have had their doors removed.
