Description
Nos. 13-20 on High Street in Cleator Moor is a row of shops built in the late 19th century, with some later alterations. The building features incised stucco with a cornice above the shop windows and sill bands on the upper floors, along with an eaves cornice. It has a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate, with brick chimneys that have cornices at the mid and end points. The structure is three storeys high and consists of eight two-bay shops, which are separated at ground level by panelled pilasters topped with acanthus capitals. The shop fronts have been updated in the 20th century. The first-floor windows are framed in stucco surrounds with pediments, alternating between two triangular and two segmental shapes, supported by corbelled half-shafts. The second-floor windows also have stucco surrounds but feature splayed feet. The elevation facing Union Street has a similar design but includes segment-headed windows and a door on the ground floor. A panel between the first and second bays on the first floor displays entwined initials: D. & A.J.S. The windows throughout the building are a mix of sash and 20th-century casements.
