Description
The National Westminster Bank, built in the late 19th century, is located on the south side of High Street in Cleator Moor. The building features snecked rubble on a chamfered plinth, with rough-dressed stone except for the architraves and carved details. It has a string and egg and dart cornice between the floors, although this is partially hidden by the bank sign. Above the first-floor windows, there is a string course with an eaves cornice. The roof is covered with graduated slate and includes moulded copings and kneelers, as well as two gabled dormers topped with finials. The building is two storeys high and has five bays.
The central entrance consists of a panelled door set within an architrave that has a serpentine head. To the left of the door are two windows with similar serpentine heads, while to the right are three windows separated by engaged Ionic columns that support an egg and dart hoodmould. The first floor and dormers are symmetrical, featuring a single window above the door and two windows on either side. Polygonal pilasters extend up to the sides of the dormers, which each contain a three-light wood-mullioned window with a serpentine head, a keystone that rises to form a finial, and a swag below.
