Description
The Cleator War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with additions for the Second World War. It is located in a roadside enclosure on Main Street in Cleator, Cumbria, near the junction with Cleator Gate.
The memorial features a silver grey granite draped urn adorned with a floral swag on its north face, which sits atop a tall, three-tier pedestal. Each face of the third tier displays floral rosettes, and the cornice below is decorated with egg and dart moulding. The plinth has stone plaques on two faces that contain inscriptions and rests on a moulded foot and a three-tiered base. The inscriptions are made with leaded lettering and continue onto the foot and base.
The principal inscription on the north side of the pedestal reads: "ERECTED IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE CLEATOR AND T TERRACE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 KILLED 15 NAMES DIED ON SERVICE 5 NAMES THEIR SPIRIT LIVETH EVERMORE." The Second World War inscription is located on the west face and states: "1939-1945 10 NAMES."
The memorial is set on a raised concrete foundation that creates an additional step. It is enclosed by a low wall made of Cumberland red sandstone, featuring castellated coping and decorative iron railings and a gate facing the road.
