Description
Byre House and Barn, located to the left of West Wood Farmhouse, is a Grade II listed structure that dates from the late 18th century. This barn and byre-house have been altered over time, with the byre once featuring domestic accommodation above. The building is constructed of squared rubble laid in alternating wide and narrow courses, topped with stone-flagged roofs.
The byre-house is square in plan and has a barn attached at an angle to the left. It is two stories high with one bay and features alternating quoins. The entrance includes a Dutch door in a flush surround, although the right jamb has been removed. To the right of the door, there is a small replaced two-pane light in a flush surround, and above this, a square opening in a similar surround. The roof is low-pitched, and the left side has an external stone stairway leading to a boarded door.
The barn is two stories tall with three bays, featuring a plinth and alternating quoins. The front gable has a large round archway with tooled voussoirs and alternating jambs, and the roof is also low-pitched. On the left side, there are two partly-glazed, hit-and-miss windows on the ground floor, a square opening, and three breathers above. Additionally, there is an owl hole in the rear gable.
Detached farm buildings located to the left and rear of the main structure are not considered of special interest.
