Description

The archway, dated 1823, was designed by Ignatius Bonomi for the London Lead Company. Constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, it is in a Classical style. The archway marks the entrance to a new development providing housing for the company's most valued workers. It features a keyed semicircular arch with archivolt resting on impost blocks. A top cornice is followed by a blocking course, interrupted by a raised tablet bearing "MASTERMAN PLACE" and the date in Roman capitals. A top band finishes the tablet. Mackenzie and Ross documented the structure in their 1834 History of County Durham.
