Description

The Middleton-in-Teesdale War Memorial is located at the north-western end of Horsemarket, set within a triangular green. It is accessible via a paved path from the road. The green is surrounded by a low stone wall with piers, from which spiked chains are suspended. The memorial itself is a tall obelisk with a square base, rising from the corniced cap of a pedestal that sits on a three-stage base.

On the front face of the obelisk, a small wreath is carved in relief, and the cornice below features a small shield carved in low relief on each side. Each face of the pedestal has inscriptions:

  • The north-west face reads: "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR,/ 1914 – 1918./ (NAMES)"
  • The north-east face states: "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945./ (NAMES)"
  • The south-east face commemorates: "ERECTED/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE FALLEN, AND IN HONOUR/ OF THOSE WHO SERVED/ BY THE INHABITANTS OF/ MIDDLETON-IN-TEESDALE/ 1921"
  • The south-west face honors: "ALSO/ IN MEMORY/ OF THE FOLLOWING, WHO DIED FROM/ THE EFFECTS OF WAR SERVICE./ (NAMES)"

Additionally, the front face of the upper stage of the base is inscribed with the phrase: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS."
