Description

The Stickney War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Luke, which is a Grade II* listed building. Positioned to the south of the church and facing the road, the memorial is made of local Weldon stone and takes the form of a spired obelisk topped with a Celtic cross. Its design is similar to other war memorials created by the same masons at Fishtoft and East Kirkby.

The memorial is set on a concrete platform with a square, three-stepped stone base. From this base rises a four-sided plinth with a canted top and an inset stone cartouche on the southern side. The obelisk itself is square in plan and features octagonal columns at each corner, each adorned with an elaborate foliate capital. These columns support a moulded arch that forms a blind arcade on each side of the obelisk. Above this, a tapering eight-sided spire culminates in a foliate capital and a Celtic cross fleury. Stone vases are placed on the top step of the base on the southern, eastern, and western sides of the memorial.

The main dedicatory inscription on the southern face of the obelisk reads: "TO THE GLORY/ OF GOD AND IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO LAID/ DOWN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR." The names of 20 men who died are inscribed on the other faces, with the western face listing the years 1914, 1915, and 1916; the northern face showing 1916 and 1917; and the eastern face displaying 1917 and 1918. Additionally, a cartouche with the date 1939-1945 is inscribed on the canted surface of the plinth, and the names of those who died in 1944 are engraved in relief on the inset stone cartouche.
