Description

The Tiverton War Memorial is a Grade II-listed structure located in a small green area bordered by Stocks Bank and Huxley Lane in the center of Tiverton. It is surrounded by several other Grade II-listed buildings. The memorial is a simple sandstone obelisk, square in shape, which stands on a pedimented plinth that is elevated on a two-stepped base.

The front face of the obelisk features the inscription "TO THE GLORY OF GOD" at the bottom. Below this, on the face of the plinth, is the inscription "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF," with the names of the fallen soldiers incised beneath it.

The two steps of the base also bear inscriptions. The upper step continues the dedication to those who fell in the First World War, stating "OF TIVERTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The lower step has the Second World War dedication inscribed on its tread, reading "1939 – 1945 (NAME)," while the riser features the epitaph "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THIS."

The memorial is set within a slab-paved enclosure that is bordered by a raised kerb, topped with black-painted metal railings and a gate.
