Description

The Beeston Cast Iron Lock on the Shropshire Union Canal, built in 1828 by Thomas Telford, is a notable lock featuring a chamber and wing walls lined with cast iron plates. It has a pair of wooden bottom gates equipped with gate paddle gearing, and a pair of steel top gates, one of which has a gate paddle mounted on the towpath side, along with two ground paddles. All the paddle gearings are mechanical. An iron footbridge spans the lock tail. This lock is unique and is designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
