Description
The Cambois War Memorial is a First World War memorial made of sandstone with granite panels. It features a square three-stepped stone base and a rectangular pedestal with inset granite panels, topped by a segmental pediment. A pillar with a carved stone wreath at the base supports the pedestal monument, which includes a shield and cross.
The front inscription reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS'." Additional inscriptions on the other faces list the names of the fallen. The memorial is enclosed by a brick wall with pillars and stone coping, and a granite plaque affixed to the wall bears the names of those who fell in the Second World War, reading "1939 - 1945."
The original date of the monument is unknown, but the plaque for the Second World War was unveiled in 1947 and dedicated by the Reverend Chambers. The address was given by Mr. Gray, the former headmaster of the nearby school, who had taught all those who were killed. The memorial was restored in 1995. This memorial reflects strong local ties through the names of the fallen and is designated as a Grade II listed structure.
