Description
No. 16 Town End is a house, now used as storage buildings, dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and irregular quoins, set on boulder plinths, with the eaves raised in coarser rubble. The roof is made of Welsh slate. The building has two storeys and three bays. The central boarded door features stone jambs with top blocks under a stone lintel. To the left, there is a similar lintel and flat sill above a 4-pane light, while to the right, there are stone jambs. The first floor has three wide windows with plain stone surrounds; the central window has a central mullion, and the outer windows have 4-pane lights. The right end chimney is built of thin courses of rubble with a top band. The rear of the building shows a high platform at the right leading to a first-floor porch.
Inside, the ground-floor room features a bolection-moulded chimney piece that contains a cast iron range, which was concealed at the time of the survey. The room has deep narrow beams with curved soffits that support slightly-chamfered wide joists, and the floor is stone-flagged. The first-floor room includes a fireplace with plain stone jambs and a lintel, along with a cast-iron oven. The rear porch contains stone stairs. The building was probably originally designed as a separate dwelling on each floor.
