Description

96 and 97 Elvet Bridge are two houses that have been converted into a shop. They date from the 17th century and early 18th century and are built on the site of the medieval chapel of St. Andrew, which may still be part of the structure. The exterior features painted render, with the rear made of brick on sandstone rubble, and the roof is covered with French tiles.

The first house on the left has three storeys and one bay. The shopfront has been renewed and includes a central door and a plain fascia. There is a central late 19th-century sash window on the first floor and a small sash window with glazing bars on the second floor, located to the right of the centre. The right gable has an external chimney stack that has been renewed in brick at the upper part, topped with rendered coping.

The second house is two storeys with one bay and a one-storey section to the right. It features a shaped gable over the first bay, which has a plain shop window and a late 19th-century sash on the first floor. The second bay has a plain shop window. The right return and rear of the building have sandstone lower courses, which are corbelled out over the bridge cutwater now on land, supporting brick corbelling and the rear of the house, which has a brick floor-level band.

Inside, there are substantial beams that run transversely over the left shop.
