Description
82, 83, and 84 Bailgate are three houses that have been converted into two shops. They date back to the 14th century, were extended in the early 17th century, and underwent alterations in the late 19th century. The buildings are constructed of stone, rendered and colorwashed, with timber framing beneath 20th-century cladding. They feature a plain tile roof with an off-centre 18th-century ridge stack and a jettied first floor. The structure is two storeys high and has three bays.
On the left side, there is part of a 14th-century chamfered archway that leads to a passage. To the right of this archway is a 19th-century shopfront, which includes an off-centre door set in a splayed recess, flanked by single windows. Further to the right is an early 19th-century shopfront featuring a glazing bar window and a 20th-century glazed door. Above these shopfronts, there is a plain sash window and two 20th-century windows.
Inside, the buildings contain five posts, one of which is jowled, along with three chamfered spine beams and a restored stud wall with plastered nogging.
