Description
No. 16 Bailgate is a house that now serves as both a residence and a shop. It dates back to around 1500, with modifications made in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The building is constructed of brick and stone, rendered, with internal timber framing, and features a pantile roof with a gable stack. The south gable has been renewed with coping.
The structure is two storeys high, plus attics, and has a single bay in an L-plan layout. The shopfront, which is a 20th-century addition, has pilasters and a half-glazed corner doorway, with a single window on each front, all beneath a bracketed fascia. Above this, there is a canted 19th-century bay window with three plain sash windows. Further up, there is a flat-roofed dormer that includes a 20th-century glazing bar casement.
At the rear, which faces Gordon Road, there is a 20th-century shopfront with a single window, and above it, two plain sash windows from the 19th century. Inside, at the west end, there are a pair of crucks, and at the rear of the east range, remnants of patterned wall paintings from around 1500 and 1600 can be found.
