Description
15 Bailgate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 17th century, underwent alterations in the late 18th century, and was refronted in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, which may have originally been timber framed, and features a pantile roof with a single ridge stack, brick dressings, and a rendered north gable.
Architectural details include corner pilasters, a moulded cornice, and a shaped coped gable. The structure has two storeys plus attics and consists of a single bay. On the east side, there is a pilastered wooden shopfront that includes a single window and a glazed door beneath a bracketed fascia. Above this, there is a square hipped bay window with two casements, and further up, a glazing bar sash window with a wrought-iron sham balcony.
The north front, facing Gordon Road, features a reeded pedimented doorcase, with an early 20th-century shop window on the left and a 18th-century glazing bar bow window with shutters on the right. Above the bow window, there is a glazing bar sash flanked by a margin light sash and a 20th-century casement. The interior has not been inspected.
