Description
The City Hotel, originally a house, dates from around 1700 and is now a public house. It is constructed of painted brick and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has three storeys and an attic, with two bays. The left bay contains a half-glazed door, while the right bay has a six-panelled door with an overlight, both set in a plain wood surround. The first bay features a ground-floor sash window and a first-floor tripartite sash window. The second bay has a two-storey canted bay, and the second floor and attic are fitted with tripartite sash windows. Notable architectural details include a dentilled eaves band and an attic floor band, as well as a square-headed ridge dormer. There are no visible chimneys.
Inside, the hotel features a late 17th-century open-well staircase. Although the lowest flight has been altered, it retains a moulded closed string, fat barley-sugar-twist balusters, and a wide, flat handrail with panelled sides. The square newels have moulding that continues with the handrail.
