Description

This is a gazebo located approximately 100 metres north of No. 4 in Staindrop, built in the mid-18th century. It is constructed of brick, primarily in English garden wall bond, with ashlar quoins and dressings, and features ashlar steps. The roof is not visible. The structure has three storeys and a square plan with one bay.

On the south elevation, there is an architrave around the door and a three-pane overlight to the left. Above this, there are similar architraves to the sash window, which has diamond-patterned glazing bars, and to a vertical oval light on the top floor that also features patterned glazing bars, suggesting it may have been used as a dovecote. The building includes a sill band, a top cornice, and a coped ashlar parapet. The left return has sill bands for the sashes in architraves on the ground and first floors, while the top floor has a boarded oval architrave.

The north elevation features a long flight of stone steps, with the lowest steps now level with the raised ground. This elevation includes an ashlar wall with an open cruciform light and a door in an architrave. The double doors, which fill the height of the first floor, have patterned glazing bars in the upper two-thirds and are set in an architrave beneath a scroll-bracketed cornice. Above, there is a boarded oval opening.

Inside, the first-floor room has a stone architrave around the fireplace on the east wall, a fret-moulded dado with dentils, and corniced pilasters. There is also a shell-hooded cupboard to the left of the fireplace with shaped shelves.

The view to the north, which was formerly of Raby Park, is now obscured by Ladyclose Wood.
