Description
Central Buildings is a structure that originally comprised four houses and a restaurant, dating from the early to late 18th century, with some alterations from the early 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble, with some parts rendered, and features ashlar dressings and quoins. The roofs are mostly pantiled, with some areas having stone-flagged eaves, while Melrose Cottage at the rear has a concrete-tiled roof. The building has stone gable copings and both brick and stone chimneys.
The north elevation facing the road has two storeys and seven windows with irregular spacing. On the left, there is a three-bay house that features a central six-panel door within a plain painted surround, flanked by windows with glazing bars in a corniced, slightly-projecting style. Above, there are three late 19th-century sashes, with the central window being narrower, and the roof is hipped on the left side.
In the center, there is a one-bay second house that used to be a shop. It has renewed doors on the right and in the center of a wide, slightly canted shop window with glazing bars. To the left, there is an oriel window above with renewed sashes that also have glazing bars.
To the right is the restaurant, which has three bays, with the third bay under a gable facing the street. It features a low, partly-glazed door in the first bay, a canted bay window on the left, a corniced square projecting bay window in the center, and a wide, slightly canted bay window on the right. Above, there are three sashes, all with glazing bars. The roofs vary in height and include some moulded kneelers, with chimneys, some of which have been renewed, located on the ridges and gables. The rear elevation includes Melrose Cottage at the center, which has one bay and two storeys, although its windows and roof have been altered.
