Description
East Masham House and West Masham House are a pair of houses dating from the mid to late 18th century. They are constructed of tooled coursed squared sandstone with a painted ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings. The roof is of graduated Lakeland slates with stone gable copings.
The houses are three storeys high and arranged with three bays each. The main entrance to East Masham House is a partly-glazed six-panel door, positioned between the second and third bays, and features a patterned fanlight within a round-headed surround. A decorative cornice extends above the fanlight, resting on pilasters that flank it. The entrance to West Masham House, at the extreme left, is a six-panel door with partly-glazed panels and a 20th-century stained glass overlight set in a roll-moulded surround. The ground floor has three canted bay windows with sashes. Similar sashes are found on the first floor, while the square sash windows of the second floor have architraves and projecting stone sills.
The low-pitched roof has moulded kneelers and wide copings. A small, square, banded chimney is on the left end, while taller, banded chimneys with round-topped blocking courses are located at the right of each house. At one point in their history, the buildings served as the Masham Hotel.
