Description

An inn, later converted into two houses, dating from the early to mid-18th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with painted ashlar dressings, a plinth, and quoins, topped by a roof of dark grey asbestos tiles with stone gable coping. It has two storeys and six bays, with No. 6 occupying the left two bays. A partly-glazed six-panel door serves No. 6, while a renewed door is located in the third bay of No. 5, both set within doorcases featuring moulded jambs and lintels, with corner patera, panelled fascias, and deep pediments. The treatment of No. 6 includes guttae under the cornice, which projects forward over pilasters; No. 5 has a dentilled pediment bed. The first two bays feature full-height bowed projections with tripartite sashes containing glazing bars, and moulded lead copings. Other windows are sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals, flat stone lintels, and sills, with an inserted sash window between the doors. The left gable has moulded kneeler coping. The left return of No. 6 displays a flat stone lintel over a four-panel door, with the top panels secured by wood buttons, and shows paired gables. A rear stable wing attached to No. 5 is notable for its high, narrow arch spanning the former stairs to servants' rooms above. Inside No. 5, a wide dogleg staircase features shallow risers, a keyed moulded arch to the stairs on panelled pilasters, and a shallow grip handrail on turned balusters that diminish at the turn, maintaining the same plane as both the upper and lower balustrades and string. An architrave frames a candle cupboard, without a door, on the lower flight. Window shutters are present in most rooms. The building was formerly known as the Queen's Head Inn.
