Description

This is an Early 18th-century gazebo with attached walls, located within the grounds of Stowey Court. The gazebo is constructed of Flemish bond red brick, with some random rubble to the ground floor, a plain band at the first floor level, and a moulded sill band. It has an ogee shaped slate roof which formerly had a ball finial, now removed. The gazebo is square in plan and two storeys high, with a store room on the ground floor. The first floor gazebo has two 12-pane sash windows on each face, with emphasised voussoirs and keystones. A projecting brick stack is located on the North side. The entrance to the East side is within a Venetian surround featuring a triple keystone; it contains a six-panelled door, a three-light fanlight, and flanking eight-pane sash windows with pilasters and a cornice. Access is provided via a flight of 13 stone steps with nosings. A splayed brick parapet, with a moulded stone coping, is present on each side. Inside, there is a fireplace. A broad segmental archway, with brick voussoirs, supports the North stack. Attached rubble walls, approximately 2.5 metres high, are located to the East and North. The wall to the North extends for 40 metres, and the wall to the East extends for 120 metres before turning North-East; a 10-metre section of the wall to the East turns in this direction. The walls are primarily included for their group value.
