Description

Stowey Court is a country house with a complex history, dating back to the early 16th century with a rear wing, and featuring a front range built in 1588. Later in the 19th century, additions and alterations were made, followed by extensive restoration in the 20th century. The house is rendered and colourwashed, with a stone plinth band and a plain band at first floor level. It has a 20th-century tile roof with coped verges, some with bases for finials, and rendered ridge stacks with stone caps. The layout is L-shaped, with a further service wing to the right of the main frontage.

The main front elevation is two storeys and attics, with three bays. The first floor has two-light stone mullioned and transomed windows, though the mullions and transoms have been reconstructed in stone. Two small two-light stone-mullioned windows, also reconstructed, are in the attic, set within two front-facing dormer gables. The ground floor has two pairs of French windows with glazing bars. A low, 19th-century two-storey porch projects to the right, with a plain stone surround to the 20th-century panelled door and transomlight above; a small two-light casement window sits above the door, both features projecting under a gable. The service wing to the right has two storeys and two bays, with restored two-light mullioned and transomed windows, the first-floor windows set within half-gables.
