Description
The forecourt walls and garden room to Stowey Court feature some elements from the 16th century, but they have likely been largely rebuilt in the 17th century and later. The walls are constructed from random blue lias rubble and enclose a grassed forecourt. The walls on the north and south sides are approximately 50 meters long, while the east wall is about 40 meters long. The north wall includes a chamfered 4-centred arch door opening set in a dressed stone surround, along with two semi-circular head door openings made with rough hewn voussoirs. The east wall has a single pointed arch door opening in a moulded surround with a plank door and moulded coping. The south wall features two broad carriageways in moulded 4-centred stone surrounds with stopped labels; the western end of this wall is blocked and has a 17th-century door opening with a semi-circular head, highlighted by a keystone and imposts, and this section also has moulded coping.
At the northeast corner of the forecourt stands a two-storey garden room, likely from the 18th century but rebuilt in 1974. It has a rubble frontage with brick quoins and a parapet with coping, topped by a corrugated plastic pent roof. The ground floor has two tall segmental-headed window openings in brick surrounds with 20th-century casements, as well as two brick-lined semi-circular head coved niches on the first floor and a central blocked circular opening. The ground floor also features a central semi-circular head door opening with a brick surround and paired 20th-century glazed doors. The north wall has a lower inner wall at the rear, which appears to be the ground floor of a former building. There is a raised terraced walk between the two walls supported on brick vaulting, with a flight of stone steps at the west end.
