Description

A gazebo and attached garden wall, likely dating from the mid-18th century. The structure is constructed of coursed squared stone, with brick lining in stretcher bond within the wall, and has a stone slate roof. The garden wall surrounds a square enclosure, with a two-storey, L-shaped gazebo positioned at the north-west corner. The gazebo features quoins, and its openings have plain stone surrounds. The north-east front has a window on each floor, the ground floor window being taller and containing a four-pane sash. Shaped gutter brackets are present, and the roof is pyramidal with a finial base. A lean-to roof has been added to cover a cantilevered stone staircase leading to the ground floor doorway in the left return. The rear of the gazebo has a tall, blocked window and one gutter bracket. The right return features a window on each floor, with the first floor window having a four-pane sash and gutter brackets. Internally, an inserted corner fireplace is present on each floor; the ground floor room has a moulded cornice and a coved ceiling. The garden wall has quoins and flat coping. It stands approximately 1.5 metres high on the west side, 3 metres high on the north side, 3.5 metres high and stepped on the east (road) side, and rebuilt and 1.5 metres high on the south side. The enclosure was formerly used as a tentercroft, and historical records indicate it was originally larger, with the gazebo situated more centrally.
