Description

This is a farmhouse, now divided into three dwellings, with Lane Ends used as a store. It dates to 1628, with alterations in the 18th century and subdivision likely occurring in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone, with smaller blocks visible on the left return, and incorporates a wing of rubble brought to course. It has a stone slate roof.

The main range (Nos 2 and 3) has a two-storey, three-bay design, with a cross-wing set back on the right. A roll-moulded doorway with a deep lintel leads into an internal porch, which features a small chamfered oculus with a gutter spout above in the right return, and inside, a stone bench. A later doorway is located on the left, and there is a stop-chamfered quoined Tudor-arched doorway to an internal passage. The lintel of this passage doorway bears a date and initials (only an 'E' is visible). There are three three-light double-chamfered mullion windows on each floor (mullions have been removed). A continuous dripmould runs along the ground floor, and a decorative dripmould with the initials 'E' 'W' is above the first-floor windows. End stacks are located behind the ridge, with another stack positioned between bays one and two, forward of the ridge. The wing has quoins and double-chamfered mullion windows. An inserted doorway is present, alongside a two-light window (mullion removed) and a four-light window, all under a continuous dripmould with heartstops and the initials 'E' 'W'. A four-light window (one mullion removed) with a hoodmould is on the first floor. Kneelers and coping are also present.

At the rear, the walling on the right of the main range is of rubble brought to course, where the coursing has been removed due to the rebuilding of an adjoining barn. Double-chamfered mullion windows are present. A projecting wing on the left has a five-light window (two mullions removed and a door inserted) below a four-light window, both under dripmoulds. To the right return is an arched light with sunk spandrels on each floor. The main range features windows of two-lights, eight-lights with a king mullion, and six-lights, all under a continuous stopped dripmould; on the first floor are windows of four-lights (single-chamfered, heightened, with two mullions removed) and five lights. On the left return, a doorway serves No 3. The interior has not been inspected.

Differences in walling and other features suggest that the front wall of the main range has been raised and possibly brought forward. This implies that originally the front of the wing was level with the rest of the house, a more common layout in the locality.
