Description

No. 13 Thorngate is a house that was later converted into a house and flat. It dates from the late 18th century and features a late 19th-century shop. The building was restored in 1989 for the Teesdale Buildings Preservation Trust. It is constructed of irregular courses of squared stone with ashlar dressings and has a roof made of stone slate, complete with stone gable copings, a stone ridge, and a stone chimney.

The house has three storeys and a three-window range. On the left side, there is a renewed six-panel door with an inserted overlight, framed by a chamfered tooled stone surround raised for the overlight. The shop front occupies the rest of the ground floor, projecting slightly and featuring narrow pilasters flanking a central recessed half-glazed door and two-light windows beneath a full-width entablature with a moulded frieze.

A 19th-century alteration above the shop includes four-pane sashes in a canted bay, which is adorned with pilasters and a zigzag decoration on the frieze that matches the moulding on the shop. The upper floors have four-pane sashes set in raised stone surrounds with slightly projecting stone sills. The low-pitched roof is finished with gable copings on moulded kneelers and has a transverse stack on the right side. The interior has not been inspected.
