Description

Charlton House is a house with attached rear outbuildings and walls, dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with alterations in the 19th century. The front of the house is rendered with painted ashlar dressings, while the rear wing is of rubble construction with ashlar dressings. The roof is covered in thin asbestos tiles imitating Welsh slate, and features stone gable copings and a rendered chimney.

The house has three storeys and a single-window front, alongside a two-storey, two-window rear wing. A four-panel door with a small overlight is located on the right side, and a canted bay window with colonnettes on wood mullions is on the left, both set beneath a continuous wood entablature. The first floor features a tall window with a painted stone surround. The ground floor has plain sash windows, while the first floor has four-pane windows. The top floor has C20 glazing in paired smaller lights, possibly originally for weaver’s work, within a similar jamb and head, but with an altered sill. The roof has moulded kneelers and a chimney on the left end. The left return features a half-glazed C20 door leading to the rear, with small windows above on each floor.

The rear wing has four-pane sashes in windows of irregular size and spacing, with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The outbuildings are of one low storey with stone slate roofs. The interior of the house has not been inspected. A high rear wall of rubble with flat stone coping continues around the north side of the property, forming part of the south side of Gray Lane.
