Description
This house, formerly a domestic wing of Thorngate House, is now divided into flats. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and has undergone alterations, including those recorded on a plaque at No.8, relating to Sir John Hullock. A reused porch from the 19th century and a 20th-century vehicle entrance have also been added. The construction is of rubble with ashlar dressings, and the roof is not visible. Stone chimneys are present.
The building is four storeys high with a three-window front. The left bay is the widest. A shallow porch, featuring four tall Ionic columns, has been inserted on the left side. It shelters a renewed door in a plain stone surround, a narrow window in a similar surround, and a six-panel door with a high overlight. To the right of the porch is an elliptical vehicle arch with voussoirs resting on ashlar jambs with impost bands. This arch has 20th-century glazed doors. A 20th-century boarded vehicle door is inserted centrally, beneath a steel lintel. Early 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars are found on the upper floors; those in the first two bays are closer together, all set within plain stone surrounds. Quoins appear above the eaves of the adjacent building to the right. The roof has a right gable coping on a moulded kneeler, with a right-end chimney. The interior has not been inspected.
