Description

Johanson House is a pair of houses that have been converted into four flats. They were built in the late 18th century, with a facade that reflects an early 19th-century style. The building was restored in 1983 for the Teesdale Buildings Preservation Trust. It features coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, while the right return gables are rendered and made of rubble, with rear quoins. The roof is covered with stone slates and has stone gable copings.

The front range consists of two storeys and has a three-window arrangement. The ground floor masonry has been restored, featuring a central six-panel door with a three-pane overlight in a plain stone surround. The flanking sash windows, which have glazing bars, are also restored and have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The first floor has similar sash windows. The roof has stone gable copings supported by renewed moulded kneelers and end chimneys. On the right return, there is a plain stone surround for a single small sash window on the ground floor towards the rear. The gable of the rear range is set back and constructed of rubble with quoins. The east elevation of the rear range has plain stone surrounds for a central door and three windows. The interior has not been inspected.
