Description
31 Thorngate is a former weaver's house, which has been converted from two houses into one. It dates back to 1727 and was restored in 1981 for the Teesdale Buildings Preservation Trust. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and some quoins, topped with a roof made of stone slates featuring a stone ridge, chimneys, and gable copings. It has three storeys and a three-window range. The ground floor has been restored and features a central two-panel door with a carved lintel that displays the date and initials. Flanking the door are six-pane sash windows in raised stone surrounds, while the first floor has renewed four-pane windows. The second floor showcases a row of eight conjoined windows with tooled stone surrounds and restored nine-pane fixed lights. The roof is finished with gable copings that rest on moulded kneelers and has end chimneys. The interior has not been inspected.
