BARNARD CASTLE

NZ01NW THORNGATE 770-1/1/206 (South side (off)) Footbridge over River Tees (that part in Barnard Castle CP)

GV II

Footbridge. Dated 1882 on original cast inscription `WILSON BROS. & CO. ENGINEERS 1882 DARLINGTON'; founder's plates STOCKTON MI Co'; some Ns reversed. Wrought-iron with cast-iron approach railings and wood deck. 2 iron trestles support beams of deck and top girder of lattice parapets joined by overhead lattice, with thin wrought-iron lamp holders at ends. Lower girders of parapets descend towards ends and are set in ground below deck level. 5 flat-section rails attached between crossed and upright members of lattice. Approaches have fluted cast-iron posts with domed finials; smaller posts riveted to descending upper rail of parapet. 3 round wrought-iron rails threaded through posts. This bridge was constructed for the mill workers of the nearby mills, and it allowed access, on foot, from across the river to the heart of the mill complex. See also Startforth CP.
