Description

Footbridge over the River Tees, located in Barnard Castle, was built in 1882. It features an original cast inscription that reads "WILSON BROS. & CO. ENGINEERS 1882 DARLINGTON" and includes founder's plates from the Stockton Iron Company, with some letters reversed. The footbridge is made of wrought iron and has cast-iron approach railings and a wooden deck. It is supported by two iron trestles, which hold the beams of the deck and the top girder of the lattice parapets. These parapets are connected by an overhead lattice and have thin wrought-iron lamp holders at each end. The lower girders of the parapets slope down towards the ends and are set into the ground below the deck level. There are five flat-section rails attached between the crossed and upright members of the lattice. The approaches feature fluted cast-iron posts with domed finials, along with smaller posts riveted to the descending upper rail of the parapet. Three round wrought-iron rails are threaded through the posts. This bridge was built to provide access for mill workers from across the river to the main mill complex.
