Description

This is a mid-19th century barn, originally a woollen mill and later a chamois leather factory. Between 1935 and 1983 it was used by the North of England Chamois Leather Company, producing protective clothing for the steel industry and the Admiralty. The building was converted in 1982-85 for the Teesdale Buildings Preservation Trust. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, and has roofs of stone and Welsh slates with stone gable copings.

The north elevation, facing a courtyard, is three to four storeys high with a three-bay and a two-bay section. A former vehicle shed has rounded arches with voussoirs at ground level, and small fixed lights above. A section to the right has a four-panel door and upper windows with metal mullions and transoms, flat stone lintels, and projecting stone sills. The roof is hipped to the left.

The rear elevation, facing the river, is three to five storeys high with a five-bay and a three-bay range. It has fixed lights with metal mullions and transoms, and tiers of end plates for cast-iron reinforcing rods. One section extends an extra storey down to the water's edge.

A bridge roof butts onto the front slope of the north elevation, with a strip of windows above weatherboarding. This building represents the last of several industrial structures on the river in Barnard Castle, and unlike others on the site, it was not water-powered. It is one of only three mills remaining in the area, along with Thorngate Mill and the mill at No.22 Bridgegate.
