Description

A worsted weaving mill, dating from the early 19th century, now used as a retail book warehouse. It was built for Messrs JHS Pratt. The mill is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof with stone slate eaves and stone gable copings. The elevation facing the river has a basement and three storeys, with an 11-window range. The elevation facing Thorngate is also of three storeys and has a 10-window range, with a three-storey stair wing projecting to the left. Windows have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills; some retain early 19th century glazing bars, including 7x6 lights with top 2 rows in opening transoms, while others have been replaced with mid-19th century six-light casements. The river front displays glazing bars on the basement level, casements on the ground floor, and 3-light mullioned-and-transomed windows (or 3-light cross-casements?) on the first and second floors. Small roof lights are scattered across the roof. A one-storey left extension originally had four lights with upper glazing bars, but the roof has since been removed. The right return features double loading doors on each floor, with one window and one blocked in the attic. The Thorngate elevation has a ramp leading to an altered entrance under a wide steel lintel, which continues over a boarded door; a full-height stair wing projects in a curved shape to the left, with a pent roof to the eaves of the main building, and windows with small lights in the landings. Most windows have small lights, with six lights on the top floor in the fifth and sixth bays, and a six-light window on the first floor in the sixth bay. Three roof lights protrude from the roof and are now covered over. Some slates are missing. The interior retains cast-iron flanged piers on the ground floor.
