Description
Pierce Bridge is a bridge over the River Tees, dating from the early 16th century. It was repaired in 1673 and widened in 1789. The bridge is constructed from ashlar and coursed rubble sandstone and features three arches. On the upstream side, the outer two arches are from the early 16th century and have three pointed orders, with the northernmost arch having an asymmetrical additional arch to improve the road gradient. The central arch, dating from 1673, has three semicircular orders and triangular cutwaters. The 18th-century parapet rises from a band with segmental coping and ends in circular bollards.
The downstream side, built in 1789, is made of ashlar and has segmental arches with archivolts and triangular cutwaters between the arches. There is a pilaster buttress to the north of the northernmost arch, and the parapet rises from a band with segmental coping, also terminating in circular bollards. The south parapet continues almost to the George Hotel. Pedestrian retreats above the cutwaters have a canted internal plan, with the central ones on both sides featuring recessed panels that have illegible inscriptions, along with a similar panel in the southernmost downstream retreat. In the center of the downstream parapet, there are two recessed panels marking the boundary between County Durham and Yorkshire, with the northern panel having the inscription "Co.D." that is barely legible. The bridge is partly located in the Civil Parish of Piercebridge.
