Description

No. 8, Appleton Gate is a house, later used as a shop, dating from around 1775, with alterations made in the late 20th century. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a steep-pitched plain tile roof. The building features a band at the second floor level, cogged and dentillated eaves, coped gables, and three gable stacks. The three-storey front has a five-window range of segmentally-headed sash windows with glazing bars; the central window is blank. Above this, five smaller, similarly styled windows are set within flat-headed surrounds, with three of them also blank. A full-width shopfront was added in the late 20th century, featuring a continuous fascia. A splayed central doorway is flanked by single-pane windows. A two-storey rear wing with attic space includes two segmentally-headed sash windows with glazing bars on each floor, and a raking dormer with a Yorkshire sash window to the attic.
