Description
Bowfield Cottage is an early 19th-century cottage located on Bowes Rutherford Lane. It is constructed from squared rubble with stone-flagged roofs and stone chimney stacks, showcasing a Tudor style.
The cottage has two storeys on the left side, which features a one-bay section, and a one-storey, two-bay section on the right. The right section includes replaced narrow double doors with a latticed overlight set in a hollow-chamfered surround, topped with a 4-centred head and a hoodmould. To the right of this, there is a two-light window. The left section boasts a canted stone bay window with a configuration of 1+2+1 lights and an embattled parapet. Above, there is a two-light window on the first floor beneath a small gable with an apex finial. All windows are mullioned, featuring double-chamfered surrounds, replaced latticed lights, and hoodmoulds. The roofs are steeply pitched with overhanging eaves and verges.
The cottage also has external chimneys on the returns, which have paired diagonal shafts. There are 20th-century rear additions that are not of special interest.
