Description

Green Cottage is a house, likely dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The exterior is constructed of rubble, colour-washed and with cut stone dressings, and has a stone slate roof with a right-end stack made of white engineering brick. The house has two storeys and three bays. A renewed door is positioned slightly left of centre, featuring a tooled-and-margined lintel; directly above it is a blocked two-light mullioned window. Four-pane Yorkshire sash windows are found in the flanking bays, each with a tooled-and-margined lintel, except for the lower right window which retains the lintel from a former two-light mullioned window.

The interior walls are approximately 0.9 metres thick. Visible features include transverse ceiling beams and a section of an early square-panelled partition with moulded studs and rails and a fluted frieze.

A painted inscription “1561” appears on the door lintel; this is based on the belief of the owner that the house was approximately forty years older than a neighbouring house to the east, which previously featured an early 17th-century doorhead inscription. A 20th-century flat-roofed extension to the rear is not considered to be of architectural interest.
