Description
The entrance screen to Startforth Hall dates from the mid-18th century, with 19th-century upper parts added to the main piers and gates. It features ashlar piers and squared stone quadrant walls topped with cut coping, along with wrought-iron gates. The gate piers are rusticated, with a chamfered plinth and a later panelled block beneath a moulded capital that has a cross-gabled top. The double gates have a downswept top and arched lower rails, supported by lancehead uprights. The quadrant walls, which have low gabled coping, include lower end piers capped with pyramidal tops.
