Description

Startforth House East and Startforth House West are two dwellings that date from the early 18th century. They are constructed of stone, which is rendered and partly whitewashed, with cut dressings, and feature a graduated stone slate roof.

The buildings are two storeys high and consist of five bays. They have raised quoins, except for the lower right wall. The second bay from the right contains a six-panelled door, and there are 20th-century casements throughout, with the exception of two sashes that have lost their glazing bars. All openings are framed with old architraves. The gables are coped and sit on moulded kneelers, with stepped and corniced stacks at the ends and along the ridge. The right side of the building shows a blocked first-floor door with a timber lintel and a small blocked attic window. The left side features a door leading to Startforth House West. At the rear, there is an outshut with various windows, including one in an older blocked doorway that has an irregular-block surround.

Inside Startforth House East, the living room includes fielded-panel shutters, moulded window surrounds, and a domed cupboard with fluted pilasters and an archivolt. The large segmental fireplace in the dining room has been plastered over.

Historically, from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century, the house served as a boarding school for boys.
