Description
Brignall Mill House is a mill and miller's house that dates from the 18th century or earlier, with remodeling in the early 19th century. It was restored and converted into a single dwelling in 1977. The building is constructed of rubble with roughly-shaped quoins and cut dressings, topped by a stone slate roof.
The east elevation is divided into two parts. On the left is a two-storey, three-bay mill, featuring a boarded door with a heavy block surround and a 4-pane sash window above it. To the left, there are roughly-shaped end quoins from the older mill, another 4-pane sash window, and three small 4-pane casements. The left return displays a boarded door, an external stone stair leading to a stable door, and three tiers of pigeon holes in a triangular panel. To the right is the slightly lower two-storey, two-bay miller's house, which has a central boarded door with a plinth made of massive roughly-cut blocks to the left. The house has 4-pane sash windows, with the ones on the left set in stone surrounds and with lowered sills. There is a stack at the right end and a heightened ridge stack.
Inside, much of the mill machinery remains intact, including the undershot wooden waterwheel, sluice mechanism, three stones, gearing mechanism, and hoists. In 1977, the walls of the mill were rebuilt above the first-floor level, with all features replaced. The 1977 extensions, outshut, and small parallel wing at the rear of the miller's house are not of special interest.
