Description

Cowclose House and the adjacent byre date back to 1697, marked by the initials I.L. on the door lintel. The building has been altered and reroofed in the early 19th century. It is constructed of rubble with large cut quoins and dressings, topped with a graduated stone slate roof.

The structure is one storey and divided into two sections. The left section is a two-bay house featuring a central boarded door set in a moulded surround with the dated lintel. It has flanking stone-surround windows, although the original carpentry has been lost, and the windows have slightly projecting sills. The right section is a two-bay byre, with the left bay obscured by an added outbuilding and the right bay featuring a stable door and a boarded door, both in heavy block surrounds.

At the rear of the byre, there is another boarded door in a similar surround, along with a slit vent and a blocked opening beneath a timber lintel.

Inside the house, there is a fireplace that retains a chamfered basket arch supporting 19th-century ironwork. The property was empty and in poor condition at the time of the survey. A later outbuilding to the east, which is now roofless, is not considered of special interest.
