Description
The former house and byre, now functioning as a single byre with loose boxes, is located south of Ludwell Farmhouse barn. This structure dates from the late 17th century for the house and byre, with the loose boxes added in the early 19th century. It is built from roughly-coursed sandstone rubble, featuring quoins and ashlar dressings, and has stone-flagged roofs, except for one loose box which has a corrugated iron roof. The building is arranged in an L-plan and is two stories tall with five bays.
The house and byre display chamfered alternate-block jambs beneath a rough stone lintel at an empty doorway in the second bay, and there is a stone surround to a loft doorway above. The empty windows, which once had one, two, or three lights, all feature chamfered stone surrounds, although the mullions have been removed and one window is blocked. Most openings retain their hinge pins. The left wing, which projects forward, has one low storey with three bays. The left return includes flat stone lintels over a door and two windows in the gable of the two-story section, as well as three cast-iron Dutch doors under flat stone lintels leading to the loose boxes.
