Description

Holly Cottage, Ivy Cottage, Rose Cottage, and Woodbine Cottage are a row of four houses dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, incorporating some earlier materials. Holly Cottage has been altered in the 20th century. Woodbine and Ivy Cottages are built of coursed roughly-squared stone with cut tooled dressings, while Rose Cottage features rubble with cut dressings, and Holly Cottage is made of rubble that is rendered and color-washed. The cottages have graduated stone slate roofs, with some chimney stacks rebuilt in brick.

The front elevation is divided into three sections, stepping downhill from left to right. Woodbine and Ivy Cottages, on the left and center, are each two stories tall with two bays, featuring central 20th-century half-glazed doors and renewed 16-pane sash windows. Woodbine Cottage has flush stone surrounds around its openings, while Ivy Cottage has raised stone surrounds and a sunk panel on the door lintel. The right part of the row consists of Rose Cottage, which has a 20th-century door on the right and 16-pane sashes, all in stone surrounds, and Holly Cottage, which has a 20th-century porch on the left and pairs of 12-pane sashes, with those on the first floor in stone surrounds. Both parts of the row have end stacks, and Woodbine Cottage features a coped left gable on moulded kneelers. There are remains of a 17th-century fireplace with a massive flat-pointed lintel exposed on the left return.

Holly Cottage is included for its group value. The rear extensions are not of interest.
