Description
This pair of outbuildings, likely used as stables, dates from the mid-18th century. They are constructed from roughly-squared stone, with gable ends facing the road that are pebbledashed, and feature graduated stone slate roofs. The buildings are single storey, with the eastern building having three bays. It includes a central casement window, a boarded door on the right, and a blocked door on the left, all set under pointed arches. The western building has four bays, featuring a stable door between two blocked openings, all with pointed arches, and a second stable door under a timber lintel on the far left.
On the elevation facing the road, each building has a square-headed recess and a doorway (the doorway in the western building is blocked), both framed in an alternating-block surround and topped with a pedimented gable. Between the two buildings is a wall with arched coping and a dilapidated central gateway. This gateway served as the main entrance to the former Barningham Academy, which is now known as Newby House. The gatepiers were removed some years ago to Gate House.
