Description

The Old Smithy and adjacent cottage are located in Barningham Village. The cottage dates from the 17th century and has been altered, while the smithy was built in the mid-18th century. The structures are constructed of rubble, with a stone slate roof on the cottage and pantiles with stone slates at the eaves of the smithy.

On the south elevation, the smithy is two storeys high and has two bays. The central doorway is blocked, with a later casement window inserted. There are similar windows on either side, with blocked windows above, all featuring stone surrounds. The left gable is coped, and there is a stack at the left end. The cottage to the right is slightly taller, also two storeys and two bays. It has a doorway on the right and a two-light flat-faced mullioned window on the left; the 12-pane sashes on the first floor have lost much of their original carpentry. There are end stacks, and the right return shows a blocked chamfered window.

On the rear elevation, the smithy has boarded double doors under a timber lintel, while the cottage features two 20th-century garage doors. The buildings were empty at the time of the survey.
