Description
High Birk Hat Farmhouse, along with its attached barn and byre, dates from 1741, as indicated on the door lintel, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of squared rubble and feature stone-flagged roofs and stone chimney stacks. The farmhouse is a two-storey, four-bay structure with a replaced four-panel door and a three-pane overlight in the second bay. The door is set in a flush surround and has a lintel inscribed with "17 IID 41." The windows have flush lintels and projecting chamfered sills, including a small 12-pane sash above the door and flanking 16-pane sashes. The roof has coped gables and shaped kneelers, with end stacks that have top bands and water tables.
The two-storey barn has a blank front wall and a coped left gable. It is accompanied by a lower three-bay byre and loft. The byre features a central boarded door in a flush surround, flanked by partly-glazed hit-and-miss windows, with a boarded opening above the door. It has a low-pitched roof, and the right return of the byre includes an external stone stair leading to a boarded door.
